Gynaecology
Michael is a generalist obstetrician and gynaecologist with experience in open and laparoscopic surgery. He has a special interest in the management of pelvic organ prolapse and especially in the surgical repair of prolapse. An expert colposcopist, he is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical precancer and vulval disorders.
After undertaking his basic medical training and qualification in Sri Lanka, Michael went on to further post-graduate training in the UK. He returned to New Zealand to take up a position as senior registrar in Dunedin, where he completed his specialist training. He is currently head of department for the BOPDHB and the lead colposcopist.
Michael takes a particular interest in teaching and training medical students from the University of Auckland, and in supervising and training obstetrics and gynaecology trainees.
He understands that his patients are extremely anxious about their condition, and has become skilled at walking his patients through the often confusing nature of their symptoms, explaining the myriad of options available to them, and arriving at the appropriate treatment for their personal situation.
Michael has lived in the Bay of Plenty since 2001, and is committed to providing a quality patient-focused service to the district in both his public and private roles.
Michael and his wife have three children, and the family is very happy in the Bay of Plenty.
